The Wicklow Passport is proving extremely popular, and over the next months, we plan to inspire you with a few samples itineraries to help you discover some of Wicklow’s hidden gems while collecting the various local stamps.
On Tuesday the 15th of June 2021 we road tested our first itinerary, with the support of Finnegan Buses with stops scheduled in Carnew, Shillelagh, Baltinglass, Donard and finally Tinahely.
Check out the video below to discover all the attractions and activities you can enjoy in this beautiful part of County Wicklow.
Carnew:
Abroad Eugene Finnegan’s 30 seater bus we meandered through the green and lush countryside that is South Wicklow. Arriving at Carnew in time for breakfast al fresco of coffee and pastries in the open air at the Top Convenience Store and Filling Station we picked up our first Wicklow Passport stamps. Carnew is a beautiful and historic town with ancient forts and fine churches on its main street.
Shillelagh
Heading North to the town of Shillelagh we visited the shop of one of Ireland’s most unique craftsmakers, the Old Shillealagh Stick Makers where the history and traditions of these ancient Irish sticks was explained to us. A trully fascinating experience, and the shop is a treasure trove of all things walking and fighting sticks.
Baltinglass
Onward we travelled to Rathgall Hill Fort where the tribes of Ireland’s Ancient East lived in Bronze Age times. After taking in the magical air of this ancient place it was back to green lanes via Tullow to the town of Baltinglass in West Wicklow, where we enjoyed a hearty and delicious lunch in the comfort of the Outdoor Seating Pods at Horan’s Bar and Restaurant. After months of lockdowns and confinements, it was a real pleasure. More Stamps were fixed to our passports at this stop.
Donard
As we relaxed again into our comfortable seats, we enjoyed being regaled with tales of daring-do by Eugene, we soon arrived at our next stop. Castleruddery Bronze Age stone circle and Medieval Motte is situated just outside Donard in the stunning scenic Glen of Imaal. Ancient spirits can still be felt in this mystical place.
We then visited the nearby Dwyer–McAllister Cottage nestling in the foothills of Lugnaquilla, the highest mountain in Wicklow. It really is a wonderful monument to times past and the history attached is a testament to the Wicklow Spirit.
Tinahely
Re-joining the bus we headed south going to the market town of Tinahely where the award-winning O’Connor’s Pub has a wonderful frontage onto the main square. In the bright sunshine of late afternoon, we enjoyed a refreshing drink and shared our experiences of the day.
