After leaving Baltinglass town centre this very challenging route heads north west to Timolin before turning towards the charming village of Dunlavin and then onto the well known village of Hollywood where sustenance is available before the testing hills commence.
The Wicklow Gap climb (476m) is followed by a pleasant descent to Laragh where a short detour is available to take in historical and scenic Glendalough. From Laragh you again head uphill and pass the memorial to Shay Elliott. Elliott was the first Irishman to wear the Tour De France’s Yellow Jersey.
A speedy descent to Glenmalure follows where care is needed as the road narrows over a small bridge. After passing the Glenmalure Lodge hotel the final big climb of the day is encountered up Slieve Mann (460m).
From there the route descends to Aughavannagh and then is undulating on quiet roads back to Baltinglass via the lovely village of Rathdangan
