Carnew
Carnew is a historic village in the southernmost part of County Wicklow, Ireland, situated near the borders with County Wexford and County Carlow. Established in 1247 as the Norman borough of “Carnebothe,” it played a significant role in Ireland’s industrial history, notably through iron smelting and the establishment of a large deer park by Calcott Chambre in the 17th century. The village is also known for the Carnew executions of 1798, where 28 suspected rebels were executed by firing squad during the Irish Rebellion. Today, Carnew is a vibrant community with a rich heritage, offering a blend of historical landmarks and modern amenities.
