With National Heritage Week around the corner, Wicklow is set to be a hive of activity from 19th-27th August.
Events are planned at over 60 different locations in Wicklow and cover everything from guided tours, hikes and bat walks to photography exhibitions, nature camps for kids, archaeological digs and whale watching.
“Heritage Week is a unique celebration”, explains Deirdre Burns, Wicklow Heritage Officer, “It takes place over nine days and the majority of events are free of charge and family friendly. Additionally, all events are organised by local enthusiasts, organisations and voluntary groups so there is a great emphasis on highlighting the activities of these groups and local attractions that may not otherwise be open to the public.”
Nationally the programme is co-ordinated by The Heritage Council and supported at a local level by Wicklow County Council. As in previous years the Wicklow Heritage Office has produced a free county event guide which can be picked up at council offices, libraries and tourist offices. This year the theme focuses on natural heritage and provides opportunities to explore and learn more about Wicklow’s wonderful natural environment.
Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr Edward Timmons, commended all involved in organising events in county Wicklow stating: “Heritage Week reminds and inspires us all to appreciate and enjoy the rich heritage that exists in Co Wicklow and that contributes so much to our quality of life”.
