Talented Wicklow Students ‘The Pebble People’ Create Pebble Art For Taylor Swift
Inspired by Her song ‘Sweet Nothing’ where she references Wicklow in July, wondering whether a pebble ever misses its home. The students hope to inspire Taylor Swift’s fans to get a Wicklow Passport, discover the wonders of Wicklow and maybe even uncover just where Taylor Swift might have collected her pebble!
Excitement is building for swifties across Ireland as Taylor Swift is set to play three concerts at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium this month. Among them, 2 students from Wicklow’s Loreto College in Bray, Abigail Devine (16) and Kayna Kennedy (16), who together with fellow student Judith Joby (16), set up a mini company called The Pebble People as part of their Transition Year Programme. Over the last few weeks they have been visiting the beaches across Wicklow collecting pebbles to create a unique piece of art inspired by Taylor Swift’s song ‘Sweet Nothings’, where Taylor Swift references Wicklow in July, wondering whether a pebble ever misses its home.
VisitWicklow.ie commissioned the students to create the framed pebble artwork to mark Taylor Swift’s return to Ireland and celebrate the creativity of the students and their mini-company The Pebble People. VisitWicklow.ie and the students are hoping to inspire fans to follow in Taylor Swift’s footsteps, discover the wonder of Wicklow and maybe even uncover just where Taylor Swift might have collected her pebble. Potential locations for the song inspiration are the breathtakingly beautiful from Bray Seafront, Greystones Cove and Beach, Kilcoole Beach, Brittas Bay, Newcastle, Wicklow Town to Arklow South Beach. https://visitwicklow.ie/taylor-swift-pebble/
Speaking about the project student Abigail Devine said: “As a group, each of us were thrilled when VisitWicklow.ie reached out to us. Taylor Swift is returning to Ireland this June to perform her “Eras Tour”. However, this is not Taylor’s first time visiting Ireland. Previously, she stopped by Wicklow. We are aware of this from her song “Sweet Nothing” in which she mentions a pebble she collected and brought home with her and wonders “does it ever miss Wicklow sometimes?” Our Mini-Company, “The Pebble People”, are based in Wicklow and create rock/pebble artwork. This was the perfect opportunity to create a gift for Taylor Swift! Our best selling product was our Rock Family Frames. So of course, it only made sense that we prepare a frame for Taylor! However, we needed to spice it up a bit. We brainstormed several ideas. Eventually, I suggested that we design a treasure map of Wicklow inside the frame. This whole project has been spectacular! I genuinely loved every last bit of it”.
Their teacher Nicola Hennessy said: “Throughout the year the girls embarked on a whirlwind journey of skill acquisition such as human relations, money management and time management. Balancing a multitude of activities, they immersed themselves in learning and worked long hours to excel in both academic pursuits and extracurricular activities. Getting involved in a project like this is a once in a lifetime experience and will shape their memories long after they leave Loreto Bray. We are so proud of all their achievements thus far and predict great things for each of them in their future careers.”
