Cúrsaí Gaeilge i sléibhte Chill Mhantáin
“Scoil na Sléibhte” – Irish-language immersion courses in the Wicklow mountains – is an initiative of the company “Fuiseog”, founded by Rathdangan resident Caoimhe Ní Shúilleabháin who settled in the area almost 4 years ago after spending 13 years in Brussels working as an Irish translator. Fuiseog offers day and weekend courses and the course programme includes both classes and activities, to give participants an opportunity to practise the language not only in the classroom, but also in social situations. Accommodation is in local B&Bs and is included in the course price, along with all activities and meals.
Explaining how the idea for this enterprise came about, Caoimhe says “ What motivated me to start Scoil na Sléibhte was the desire to give language learners and Irish speakers the opportunity to practise the language outside the classroom, and to spend some time in an Irish-speaking environment. Having worked with languages in the European Commission for years, I have seen the importance of immersion to help people better their language skills and since coming home I realise how few opportunities those learning or relearning the language have to do this. I regularly meet people who express regret at not having better Irish and a desire to return to the language, and those are the kind of people I hope Scoil na Sléibhte can encourage to discover or rediscover the beauty and value of Irish.”
