In the years 2018-2020 Newtownmountkennedy & District Tidy Towns worked on the creation of the Newtownmountkennedy Map & Heritage Guide. We hope you will enjoy using this map and heritage guide.
This project was made possible by funding from Creative Ireland and The Heritage Council’s Heritage in Schools Scheme initiated by the Newtownmountkennedy Primary School. It was 1 of only 10 projects to be selected out of 70 nationwide. Two 5th class students researched the topics for 2 months in 2018. They read old stories with help from their teachers and the Newtownmountkennedy & District Tidy Towns, using the School Folklore Collection of Dúchas. There they found the record of stories from 80 years ago, written by children of the town from that time. Our modern children interpreted the old stories from their perspective as 10-year olds. Many of the people in these stories still have connections to the town today.
The design/layout and publication of the map was done by local designer Ann Glynn. Further historical detail was researched by Peter McCormick and Therese Hicks; special thanks to them. Newtownmountkennedy and District Tidy Towns funded the design/layout and the first print run has been funded by Wicklow County Council in June 2020.
