Jason Statham’s new action film Shelter arrives in cinemas this January and Wicklow features prominently throughout. Last spring, Travelahawk Beach in Wicklow Town was transformed into a remote Scottish island, complete with a purpose-built lighthouse on the upper cliff and a shelter set along the beach. Stunning imagery was captured from the sea, and the entire set looks absolutely phenomenal.

Often called the “Hollywood of Europe,” County Wicklow is a top destination for international film and TV. Its forests, cliffs/coastlines, and historic estates have hosted everything from Braveheart and Excalibur to Vikings, Vikings Valhalla, Wednesday and the The Tudors. With landscapes that easily become mystical worlds or historical settings, Wicklow continues to draw storytellers seeking cinematic backdrops.

Jason is known for playing tough action heroes and protectors, and in his latest film Shelter, he’s once again set to showcase his martial arts and combat skills.
Synopsis of Shelter:
“On a remote coastal island, a reclusive man (Statham) rescues a young girl (Breathnach) from a deadly storm, drawing them both into danger. Forced out of isolation, he must confront his turbulent past while protecting her, sending them on a tense journey of survival and redemption.”

Wicklow boasts a magnificent coastline and stunning beaches, with Travelahawk used many times across different productions. Vikings: Valhalla is perhaps the best-known project to film there regularly. Its dramatic backdrop makes the location a favourite among production companies seeking breath-taking scenery.
Travelahawk Beach is of significant heritage importance: it is said to be the first landing of St Patrick and his followers on his return to Ireland. Wicklow Head is the closest land to Wales. The sheltered beach is where St Patrick tried to land in the year 432.

The Shelter movie production used various filming locations around County Wicklow including: Travelahawk Beach, The Black Castle, The South Quay, Wicklow Town, The Mall, Wicklow Town, Wicklow Harbour, Clermont House in Rathnew, R759 – Sally Gap, Ballyhenry Road, Ashford and Main Street, Eninskerry.
