County Wicklow offers 30km of varied coastline from cliffs to sandy beaches. See below a list of the various locations that make up the Bueway in Wicklow.
Wicklow Coast Blueway: Bray
The 1.5 km long esplanade and the harbour provides great access to the sea and Bray is a popular day trip from Dublin. Bray provides sea air, and an amusement park and festivals during the summer.
- Bray Blueway Water Activities: Also open water swimming most mornings, (Bray Sea Swimmers), sea rowing (Bray Rowing Club | Bray | Facebook), Sea Scouts (5th Wicklow), commercial activity provider (Bray Adventure for Coasteering, SUP and Kayaking). Lifeguards are on duty during the summer months.
- Bray Blueway Land Activities: Promenade walk, Bray Head partial cliff walk, and nearby walk and bike trails at Kindlestown, Belmount Killruddery Estate (Hell and Back, Alive Outside activities, and Squirrel Scramble) walks and bike routes. Fat bike adventures provide bike hire and guided tours and lessons at Killruddery. There is also a youth adventure club (Queen of Peace Youth Club).
Wicklow Coast Blueway: Greystones
Sandwiched between the Wicklow mountains and the sea with a strong Victorian and Edwardian architectural heritage and social history with two Blue flag beaches close to the town centre.
- Greystones Blueway Water Activities: Sailing (Greystones Sailing Club (gsc.ie)), Rowing (Greystones Rowing Club | Greystones | Facebook), Open water swimmers (Greystones Sea Swimmers and a commercial trainer/provider (Flow State Swimming), kayaking, SUP, coasteering (Bray Adventures | Outdoor adventures on the Irish east coast). Join the Sea Scouts in Greystones (Greystones Sea Scouts) or the Life Saving Club (Poseidon Lifesaving Club).
- Greystones Blueway Land Activities: Bray Head to Greystones cliff walk, Kilcoole to Greystones Coastal Walk, Kindlestown woods and trails, Belmount off-road bike loops and Fat bike adventures
Wicklow Coast Blueway: Kilcoole
An unspoilt beach located 700 meters from Kilcoole village, while the train station, with ample car parking and toilets, is right at the beach offering direct access to Dublin.
- Kilcoole Blueway Water Activities: Open water swimming from the beach and sea angling are the most popular activities.
- Kilcoole Blueway Land Activities: An informal walk along the beach goes for just under 2 kilometres north, while it is possible to walk to Wicklow Town in the South or to the nearby coastal Aerodrome at Newcastle circa 4 kilometres away. Call into the Birdwatch Ireland Nature Reserve at Newcastle when you arrive.
Wicklow Coast Blueway: Wicklow Town
A large town with a long sea front (The Murrough) and a commercial and recreational harbour. This harbour links via a river to a large inland sea called Broad Lough.
There is a strong local tradition with marine sports. There are multiple water-front parking facilities and water access points, with public toilets in the town a short walk from the beach. S
- Wicklow Town Blueway Water Activities: Open water swimming (Wicklow Sea Swimming Club one of the largest open water swim clubs in Ireland), sailing (Wicklow Sailing Club), coastal rowing (Wicklow Rowing Club | Home), kayaking (commercial provider https://www.wicklowkayaking.ie/ Every two years the round Ireland Yacht race starts and finishes at the harbour typically in the third week of June.
- Wicklow Town Blueway Land Activities: Shorefront walks travelling North along the Murrogh which has a playground and a small cycling pump-track. A walking trail follows the Vartry river upstream to Broad Loch along a well-defined path that crosses over the river and loops back into the town at the swimming pool. Glen Beach Cliff Walk is to the South of the town. This walk brings you to the cliff area and the lighthouse can be viewed. It is possible to book self-catering accommodation in the lighthouse from the Irish Landmark Trust but it is sometimes booked up a year in advance. Equestrian lessons are possible at the nearby Wicklow Equi Tours site including beach riding.
Wicklow Coast Blueway: Brittas Bay
Brittas Bay is small 5 km stretch of Blue flag seaside with a strong tradition of swimming and surfing. There are multiple water-front parking facilities and informal water access points along the beach and public toilets in the South beach car park.
- Blueway Water Activities: Open water swimming, surfing and SUP (hire and lessons, Brittas Bay Surf School | Wicklow | Facebook). Lifeguards patrol this beach during the high season (June until September between 11 am and 7 pm).
- Blueway Land Activities: Horse riding (Wicklow Equi Tours), Brittas Beach walk.
Wicklow Coast Blueway: Arklow Town
Arklow, a Norse word, which partially means a low-lying meadow near water, is located on a Blue flag sea front and has a strong commercial marine heritage through its large commercial harbour and a growing marine recreational use.
There is parking at the north and south beaches and at the harbour. Public toilets are at the leisure centre on the northern side of the harbour and at Castletown on the southern side.
