Destination South Wicklow: Rathgall, Aghwole & Rathwood
A mix of Bronze Age, Early Christian, Chocolate & Family Fun!
Welcome to the Deep Southern end of County Wicklow. This is probably the most remote location in the County: beyond the villages of Aughrim, Tinahely and Shillelagh, on the Carlow border. Yet, as remote as it might sound, This place offers tremendous opportunities to Discover and Experience. This includes an amazing Bronze Age Ring Fort, one of the first Christian Settlement, a year round Family Fun destination, and Ireland’s most exciting Chocolate Factory.
SEE & VISIT
Aghwole Church
The early monastery is reputed to have been founded in the early 6th century by St. Finian of Clonard in Co. Westmeath.
The church, dating to the 12th century, is the only surviving structural remnant. This is a long rectangular building of which the original north, east and west walls survive largely intact. The section forming the western end of the north wall and that dividing the church are modern additions.

Rathgall Hillfort
Rathgall was a site of quite exceptional importance in the centuries spanning the birth of Christ, an importance that was clearly pan-European. The variety of structural information that the excavation yielded is unprecedented in the Bronze Age and the extraordinary concentration of artifactual evidence from the site has not been matched elsewhere in the country. Rathgall opens a wide range of questions concerning, not merely the nature of the Ireland’s later Bronze Age, but also the role of the hillfort incontemporary cultural developments.
