Location
The Wilderness Lodge is a complex of six self-catering apartments and one small cottage. It is situated in the centre of Glenmalure at the foot of Fananierin Mountain, a little over 100 metres from the Wicklow Way.
The Apartments
The apartments are part of a recently converted pottery studio. All of the rooms faces west, looking out towards Carrawaystick Mountain, and each with direct outdoor access. Five of the units sleep two people in either a double bed or two single beds and last unit which sleeps four people.
An Tigín
An Tigín (little house) is a self-contained cottage that is adjacent to the main complex. It provides extra a little extra privacy compared to the apartments. It also has it’s own entrance and all of the utilities needed to prepare meals.
The house is newly-built and is electrically heated. The bedroom can be made up with one double bed or two single beds. Each bed has an electric blanket for those extra cold nights. The room has it’s own ensuite with shower, a small dining table for two and a flat-screen television with satellite stations.
Self-Catering
Each kitchenette comes fully-equipped with a small hob cooker, microwave, half-size fridge with freezer box and a kettle. All cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery are provided. There is a complimentary welcome pack provided on arrival with tea & coffee, milk, bread and biscuits. An easier alternative to cooking is to cross the bridge to the Glenmalure Lodge to secure an evening meal or breakfast in the morning.
Walking
The Wilderness Lodge is a great base for taking a day off the Wicklow Way to relax or perhaps climb Lugnaquillia, which sits above Glenmalure Valley and is the highest mountain in Ireland outside of County Kerry. This walk is only recommended for walkers who are experienced in using a map and compass.
Alternatively, it is possible for groups of 8-16 people to use the Wilderness Lodge as a walking base for the entire Wicklow Way. Transport to and from each stage of the trail and connections to Dublin Airport are included as well as exclusive use by the group of a large communal hall.
