1916 Wicklow: Mobile App evokes life in the County
The app 1916WicklowLife is now available to download free of charge for android phones or tablets from Google Play and on iPhones or iPads from the App Store.
The app brings the pages of local Wicklow papers of 100 years ago to life. It features extracts from the Wicklow People and the Wicklow Newsletter of articles and events in the county in 1916. New articles will appear on the app every week. The app content can also be accessed via the website www.1916wicklowlife.ie
Stories featured in the early January Wicklow papers include a report on a violent (and intriguing) incident on an Aughrim farm, a school attendance case in Enniskerry, an eccentric character in Shillelagh, a concert in Tinahely and Christmas in the Shillelagh workhouse.
The app is part of the County Wicklow 1916-2016 commemoration programme which was drawn up following public consultation. Projects put forward by the public ranged from historical re-enactments and festivals in Bray, Kilcoole, Roundwood and Blessington to book publications, drama and concerts. These, combined with projects devised by members of the 1916-2016 Steering Group comprise the Programme of some 30-plus projects around the county.
While the programme has been published, events and updates can be added to the schedule – a dedicated website www.wicklow1916.com has been set up and will be an important portal for information throughout the year.
