4 Wonderful Wicklow Walks you can reach by public transport from Dublin. Explore the #WicklowOutdoors without a car!
𝟙. 𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝕊𝕦𝕘𝕒𝕣𝕝𝕠𝕒𝕗 𝕎𝕒𝕪: Bus Route 145 from Heuston Station to Kilmacanogue or Bus Eireann 133.
The bus leaves you at Kilmacanogue village where you walk on country roads for 5km upwards towards the foothills of the Great Sugar Loaf Mountain. From the Sugar Loaf Trail Carpark, the hike up the mountain is strenuous in parts, but short and most people of good fitness will be up and back in less than an hour. More - bit.ly/SufarloafWay
𝟚. 𝔹𝕝𝕖𝕤𝕤𝕚𝕟𝕘𝕥𝕠𝕟 𝔾𝕣𝕖𝕖𝕟𝕨𝕒𝕪: Bus Rote 65 from Poolbeg Street to Blessington.
The bus leaves you in Blessington, where you walk a few minutes south on the N81 towards Burrage More, signposted The Avon. This easy walk of about 6.5km in total, weaves its way along the shores of Poulaphouca Reservoir through countryside and forest on footpath and gravel track. More - bit.ly/BlessingtonGreenway
𝟛. 𝔸𝕧𝕠𝕟𝕞𝕠𝕣𝕖 𝕎𝕒𝕪 ℝ𝕒𝕥𝕙𝕕𝕣𝕦𝕞: To Rathdrum: Bus Eireann Route 133/ To Dublin: Irish Rail from Rathdrum to Dublin.
From the bus stop at the Bridge in Rathdrum it's a pleasant 2km walk along the local road signposted Moneystown to the trailhead. The Avonmore Way winds its way through the beautiful Clara Vale Nature Reserve alongside the peaceful Avonmore River with great views of the surrounding Wicklow Mountains. This is a moderate linear route finishing near Laragh, so if you are doing the full route you need to leave enough time to return to Rathdrum for the last train, or why not say overnight! 𝟜. 𝔾𝕝𝕖𝕟 𝔹𝕖𝕒𝕔𝕙 ℂ𝕝𝕚𝕗𝕗 𝕎𝕒𝕝𝕜 𝕎𝕚𝕔𝕜𝕝𝕠𝕨: Bus Route 133 from Dublin to Wicklow Town (the Monument).
Walk along the Sea Road for 15 minutes to the start of the walk at Glen Beach Cliff Walk Car Park. Although only 4km looped this walk is classed moderate has some climbs and runs close to exposed cliff edges on uneven surfaces. See the Grey Seals colony or perhaps a porpoise or dolphins offshore. Visit Wicklow..Yes yes yes.
The 145 no longer runs to Kilmacanogue on a regular basis (2 buses per day from Houston Station), the Bus Eireann 133 (every hour) or St Kevins Glendalough bus (twice daily) are the only services from Dublin city centre to Kilmacanogue village
My (our) Sunday morning boarding school ‘trek’ happy, scrambling memories.....all in a school uniform!!! Beautiful scenery, in summer sunshine, sometimes!! ❤️🔐🔏
For the Avonmore Way route, it is worth downloading the timetable for the local bus from Glendalough to Wicklow via Roundwood
