Wicklow ScreenDance Laboratory @ Mermaid Arts Centre

Following a successful outing in October last year, Wicklow ScreenDance Laboratory will run again from December 2nd to 3rd in Wicklow. The event will be led under the artistic direction and project management of Dr Adrienne Brown, with invited guest artists Róisín Whelan, Angie Smalis and Aoife Kavanagh. A special screening of 12-hour dance film Le Ballet de la Nuit will run over two days, and Artists Salon will take place and International Film Screening event.

PROGRAMME (FREE EVENT, NO BOOKING NECESSARY)

Monday and Tuesday December 2nd and 3rd Mermaid Arts Centre: the specially commissioned dance film Le Ballet de la Nuit comprising 12 international filmmakers, 12 composers and 12 hour-long films on themes of the iconic 1653 ballet of the same name will be shown, from 10 am – 4 pm each day. This commission was made to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of Festival International de Video Danse de Bourgogne, France, and features a section made by Irish-based film maker Mihaela Griveva. Spectators are welcome to come and go throughout the showings.

In partnership with Klinkerdin Experimental Arts Salon, Wicklow ScreenDance Laboratory will host an evening of dance performance, dance film screening and discussion, with special guests. Featured film/dance artists Aoife Kavanagh (Ireland), Róisín Whelan (Ireland) and Angie Smalis (Greece/Ireland) will present and discuss dance and film, along with a live dance performance from Steffi Carter (USA, a Mystery Guest and a moving dance sculpture from Inchicore College of Further education dancers. Films by Anna Maria Hutri (Finland), Erika Vaughn Byrne (USA) and Emma Minarelli (Italy) will also be screened.

This festival will round off with a screening of dance films from across the world. Video dance performance/screendance is a particularly eclectic twenty-first century medium that draws artists from multiple disciplines to form moving images that speak of the poetic and political in current times. Viewers will see films from Karen Gleeson (Ireland); Salvatore Insana (Italy); Steve Woods (Ireland); Erica Borges (Brazil/Ireland); Tara Brandel (Ireland); Angie Smalis (Greece/Ireland); Jessica Peoples (Ireland); Molly McAllister (Ireland); Aoife Kavanagh (Ireland); FuLE (France); Anna Maria Hutri (Finland); Valentina Knežević (Croatia/Germany); Hadi Moussally (Lebanon/France).
