The seaside town of Arklow, in south county #Wicklow, dates from the ninth century, when the Vikings arrived.
Arklow sits at the mouth of the River Avoca, which is the longest river wholly within County Wicklow. One of the most impressive features of the town is the Nineteen Arches Bridge, straddling the river, and famous for being the longest handmade stone bridge in Ireland.
Visitors can enjoy a stroll around the Arklow Nature Reserve, know locally as the Duck Pond! Traditionally this was boating lake created in 1958, where the original course of the river ran until the 1840's. Reeds have since reclaimed it, making the lake a biologically diverse and interesting recreational area and wildlife reserve.
Close to the Nature Reserve your will find the Arklow Bay Hotel, great for a stop off for lunch or afternoon tea. More - bit.ly/ArklowBayHotel

The Round Tower, at Glendalough. ⠀
The most iconic of all the landmarks in Glendalough, if not #Wicklow, is the Round Tower, which stands 33 meters tall.
It was built almost 1000 years ago by the monks of St. Kevin’s monastery. The conical roof had to be replaced in 1876 when it was struck by lightning. ⠀Find out more about visiting Glendalough here - bit.ly/GlendaloughRoundTower
⠀
The tower was called “Cloigtheach”, meaning bell tower, suggesting their main use. The tower was sometimes used as a place of refuge for monks when the monastery was under attack. They also served as both as lookout posts and as beacons for approaching monks and pilgrims. ... See MoreSee Less

We have tried twice in the last 6 weeks to walk in Glendalough. Car parks are full and roads at a standstill. We, like many others turned around and left. I feel sorry for those who only have one chance to visit this gorgeous place...I can return again. Traffic management needs to be reviewed or park and ride system should be introduced....we are destroying this beautiful amenity.
