Set in midst of the beautiful Wicklow
hills, lies a curious attraction where people go to lose
themselves in the countryside! Greenan Farm Museums & Maze
grew from the hobby of father and son, Jonathan and Will
Wheeler. In 1988 Jonathan planted his ½ acre hedge maze
which now stands at seven feet tall and thousands of
visitors get lost each year in its clever Celtic design.
Loved ones can oversee the fun and antics from the newly
constructed viewing platform above this unusually tricky
maze.
Nine year old Will’s collection of heritage hand-blown
bottles and traditional farming implements grew so numerous
that they merited a museum of their own and now twenty five
years later, the extensive collections are displayed in a
renovated 19th century farm house museum and a large farm
barn museum alongside a homely tea-rooms and wooden craft
shop. The wooden craft-shop built by Will is an appropriate
show case for local arts and crafts including handmade soap
created on the farm and selling fresh eggs from the happy
chickens wandering all around the farm.
The hens are one of the expanding attractions at the farm
with their new Hen Hotel and Hen Keeping workshops teaching
the skills and joy of this therapeutic hobby to the growing
number of hen enthusiasts throughout the country. Due to
requests from visitors to the farm, other re-skilling
workshops have been scheduled throughout the year including
Wild Foods and Herbal Remedies, Pig Keeping, Soap Making,
Living Willow Sculptures for the garden and Basket Making.
The Basket Making workshop is such a sell out success that
it is booked out every time it is announced on the farm’s
new website. Check out www.greenanmaze.com for more
information, however you won’t find a map of the maze on it
anywhere. You will have to come and see for yourself how
easy it is to get lost in the tranquillity of this pretty
traditional farm in the Wicklow hills.
