Q : Do you have a favorite spot or hidden gem you like to visit in Wicklow Town?
One of ours is the captivating Black Castle, standing proudly on a rocky perch overlooking the sea. A perfect `mid-term break` location to get the kids out of the house and away from those screens 📺
This castle`s story intertwines with the rich tapestry of Norman conquests in 12th century Ireland. Earl Strongbow, seeking to fortify the East Coast, granted lands to Baron Maurice Fitzgerald, tasking him with erecting protective castles like the impressive Black Castle.
Despite its imposing presence, the Black Castle faced formidable challenges from local chieftains, particularly the O’Byrne and O’Toole clans, culminating in its destruction in 1301. Yet, even in ruin, it offers breathtaking views of Wicklow Town and the coastline, serving as a poignant reminder of the struggles and resilience of past generations.
